Writing a Critique Journal Article
Writing a Critique Journal ArticleIn this article, I want to give you three tips for writing a critique journal article. You don't have to write your critique, but it is extremely helpful to write a critique of your own research and then have a mentor read your critique and tell you if it will pass their standards.Jokingly, this is called being too nice. In writing a critique, you are being kind. This means that when your mentor reads your critique, they will know what you mean when you say 'Yeah'I disagree.'Jacques-Louis Cailpot-Beaubien explained it to me as being similar to telling your child 'You're right, Mom!' In this analogy, the mentor knows more than you do. The mentor can judge whether or not your critique is based on sound scholarship. You can't judge the value of your critique because you haven't read the same work. In any case, this doesn't mean that the mentor is right; it means that your critique isn't as good as the critique of someone else. And in critiquing your own work, don't be too defensive; instead, come off as a master of your field. Make yourself look good by saying that what you wrote was a revision of a previous work. If you have a student do a critique for you, have them rewrite your article, and then revise it so that it reflects their work.Never try to circumvent your reader. The reader will infer that you're hiding something, and that's not how to engage the reader.Remember that the reader will read your critique more than once. They will read your critiques from one student to the next, and even if you've written more than one critique, have a student read it again from the first time. That way, they can get a sense of the difference between your first and second critique and can compare them to see which one stands out the most. And finally, critique your work for a dissertation committees. You can find some of them online and submit them online. But again, use your judgment as to whether you want to become involved with dissertat ion committees.Remember, if you follow these three suggestions, you should be able to write a critique in less than twenty-four hours, Jacques-Louis Cailpot-Beaubien. Enjoy!
